Over the years, VISION Optometrists has been associated with an organisation called Refilwe which means “gift” or “to give” in Tswana. The vision of Refilwe originated when Jean Stewart and Yvonne Jacques started a clinic in April 1991 on a small site next to the Lanseria Airport, North of Johannesburg. From this grew a wider Christian ministry to the needy people of the area, contributing to medical needs, childcare and education, life- and skill development and income generating activities. HIV and Aids, limited education, unemployment, lack of skills and poor housing are just some of the challenges that these individuals have to deal with. Refilwe is a Non-Profit and Public Benefit Organisation under the careful administration of their Executive director, Jaco van Schalkwyk.
Many of the activities and skills taught at Refilwe, involve visual demands and there is a great need for visual correction among this severely disadvantaged community. VISION Optometrists was inspired by the work that Refilwe does and, in association with one of our generous suppliers HOYA Hill, decided to offer eye examinations and the necessary visual aid as a contribution to this worthy cause.
