1. Regular eye examinations
Bi-annual eye test should be performed between ages 6-40 yrs and thereafter annual eye examinations are advised, especially in patients with systemic diseases that may influence vision, such as diabetes or if they have a family history of eye disease such as glaucoma.
We recommend annual eye examinations for all patients of all ages if they are spectacle or contact lens wearers.
2. Ergonomics
Your visual system will perform optimally in the correct working environment. Reduce stress on your eyes by:
- Working in good lighting conditions
- Reduced glare and reflections on your computer screen or reading material
- Appropriate posture and seating position at a comfortable working distance
- Taking breaks every thirty minutes and then staring at something at a distance to relax your accommodative system.
- Positioning yourself as far as possible from the air conditioning outlet to reduced dry eyes. Blinking also relieves dry eyes and is often reduced while staring at your computer.

4. Sunglasses – UV and Sight
The harsh action of the ultra-violet rays manifests itself in all parts of the ocular system – the cornea, crystalline lens and retina. The following is a detailed look at the impact of UV rays on each of these parts. What absorbs UV rays? UVC rays, the most powerful radiations, which are therefore the most harmful for the eye, are stopped by the ozone layer.
On the other hand, the UVB rays are only partially blocked by the ozone later while almost all the UVA rays cross the Earth’s atmosphere and hit our eyes. The cornea of the eyes absorbs UVB rays and the crystalline lens absorbs the UVA rays.
Note: Contrary to one might think, the tint of the lenses does not necessarily signify the filtering of UV rays. Lenses simply tinted in black or blue could even provoke the inverse effect as they cause dilation of the pupils, allowing a larger penetration of the UV rays into the eye.
The protective capacity of a glass is measured by its filtering power that allows the necessary ray required for clear vision to pass, blocking all the other rays, particularly the UV rays. This filter power depends on the lens and the treatment given to it during the manufacturing process.
5. Be Responsible
The following signs and symptoms shouldn’t be ignored. An eye examination is recommended.
- Frequent head aches
- Eye strain or tired eyes at the end of a day
- Red, painful, itching eyes with any form of discharge
- Drooping eye lids
- Sudden onset of double vision or squint, visual loss or visual field loss
- Fluctuation in vision
- Light flashes in peripheral vision or sudden onset of floaters in the eye
- Blind spots or tunnel vision
- Family history of eye diseases
